Week 2 – Hello reality
This was a very powerful week. We have finally started to explore the world of self-employed people. The first part of the week was a bit slower, but soon the speed started to kick in. We received an information pack from MBIE about our opportunity, got to know our contact person and were ready to start chatting with self-employed people.
Currently, we don’t have a specific problem to solve. Our mentors suggested to go out of the building and talk a lot. That’s what we have been doing this week. In total, we had approximately 20 interviews. Out of them, 10 were very high-quality coffee catch-ups and we got to know how it is to be a self-employed in more details.
The stories are different. We have heard some very sad cases about losing a lot, due to miscommunication and information’s misinterpretation. At the same time, there are very happy stories, for example, where a person with a reading disability can deal with all the government compliance himself.
Three takeaways from this week:
- Kiwis are awesome – thank you for the support and all your help!
- Cold-calling works, but it may save your nerves if you use your own network.
- Talking to customers is mentally demanding.
We are looking forward to starting conversations with government agencies. Hopefully, stories from self-employed people and government’s perspective will meet somewhere in the middle and we can make New Zealand easier for businesses together!
